Malaga Airport is set to receive €830million in investment over the next five years after the Spanish government approved a major new spending programme across the country’s airports.
The Council of Ministers approved the third Airport Regulation Document (DORA III) on Tuesday, setting out investment across the Aena network between 2027 and 2031.
Almost €13billion will be invested across Spain, including €1.267billion at airports in Andalucia.
Malaga will receive by far the largest share in the region as it plans for a huge expansion.
It comes as the airport is expected to approach 31 million passengers annually by 2031.
The investment will help fund an expansion of its terminal facilities, improvements to passenger processes and upgrades to operational safety.
Plans include adapting the security area for new scanners that allow passengers to leave liquids and electronic devices inside their hand luggage, as well as creating a larger passport-control area.
A new non-Schengen pier is also planned alongside the newer runway, while existing boarding areas will be reconfigured.
The wider expansion programme is ultimately expected to increase the terminal area from around 80,000sqm to 140,000sqm.
It will also involve the demolition of the old Terminal 1 and the existing B and C piers.
However, the entire transformation will not be completed during the 2027-2031 spending period.
Aena estimates the full Malaga expansion will cost around €1.5billion, with construction and investment continuing into the subsequent DORA IV regulatory period.
Of the money being allocated between 2027 and 2031, around €363million is specifically linked to the expansion project.
The remainder covers other investments including processes, facilities, quality improvements and the resurfacing of aircraft aprons.
€1.27billion for Andalucia’s airports
Malaga will account for roughly two-thirds of the investment earmarked for Aena’s Andalucian airports.
Sevilla Airport is set to receive €235million, including improvements to its security-control area, photovoltaic energy programme, air-conditioning systems and fire protection.
Jerez will receive €95million, including investment in its airfield and apron as well as flood prevention and a transition to LED systems.
Around €44million is destined for Almeria Airport, while Granada-Jaen Airport will receive €42million and Cordoba almost €18million.
The Algeciras heliport will receive a further €3.4million.
