A 47-year-old German woman has been brutally stabbed to death while holidaying in a campervan in Andalucia.

The victim suffered at least 20 stab wounds during the attack in Isla Cristina, Huelva, on Friday morning, according to health sources cited by Huelva Informacion.

Her alleged attacker is an Italian man aged around 60, who has been confirmed as the woman’s partner.

The pair are understood to have been travelling in the campervan and visiting Isla Cristina as tourists when the killing took place.

Emergency services were called to the area around Calle Arquitecto Aramburu Maqua, close to Punta del Caiman beach, at around 9am, but the victim was pronounced dead at the scene,

Sources told the newspaper that the alleged attacker was still holding a knife when paramedics arrived.

He was subsequently arrested by the Guardia Civil.

The Guardia Civil said earlier on Friday that ‘all hypotheses remain open’, although investigators have not ruled out that the killing was an act of gender violence.

If investigators confirm the woman was killed by her current or former partner in a gender violence case, she would become the 12th such victim in Andalucia this year.

Meanwhile, the latest available figures from the Interior Ministry’s VioGen system showed 27,885 active gender violence cases in Andalucia as of July, accounting for around 27% of the total registered across Spain.
