Malaga Airport has launched a new route connecting the Costa del Sol with a northern Italian gem.
The addition comes thanks to Volotea, an Italian airline that now operates 13 routes from Malaga.
The new connection – and its first in Italy – is with Verona, and there will be two direct flights per week, on Tuesdays and Saturdays, until October.
On Tuesdays, services depart Malaga at 5.55pm and arrive in Verona at 8.35pm, while Saturday flights leave shortly after 6.30pm and land in the Italian city at around 9.15pm.
Malaga Airport marked the launch on Tuesday with a special event at the check-in area, including a celebratory cake for the inaugural service.
The airline hopes the route will work in both directions, giving residents of southern Spain easier access to northern Italy while bringing more Italian holidaymakers to the Costa del Sol.
Gabriel Schmilovich, Volotea’s chief strategy officer, said Verona represented an important expansion of its international network from Malaga.
‘With Verona, we are adding a new destination in Italy from Malaga, a step that reflects our commitment to continuing to grow at this airport and offering an increasingly extensive network of international connections,’ he said.
Gateway to northern Italy
The new service gives Costa del Sol residents a direct connection with one of northern Italy’s most famous cities.
Verona, in the Veneto region, is internationally known as the setting for Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet and for its remarkably preserved Roman amphitheatre, the Arena di Verona.
It also provides a useful gateway for exploring the wider region, with Lake Garda lying just outside the city and destinations including Venice, Padua and the Dolomites accessible for onward trips.
The addition comes during a record-breaking period for Malaga Airport, which handled more than three million passengers in July alone for the first time in its history.
Volotea now flies to 13 destinations from Malaga
The Verona route, together with the launch of a new Santander connection this year, takes Volotea’s network from Malaga to 13 destinations across four countries.
Its four Spanish routes are Asturias, Bilbao, San Sebastian and Santander.
Another eight connect Malaga with France: Brest, Bordeaux, Strasbourg, Lille, Limoges, Lyon, Nantes and Toulouse.
Verona now becomes the airline’s 13th destination and its first in Italy.
