Three people have been arrested in Almeria over a string of burglaries carried out by a criminal group dubbed the ‘Scooter Gang’.

The Policia Nacional said the suspects, comprising two adults and a minor, are believed to have worked together to target restaurants and sports establishments across the city.

At least seven burglaries have so far been solved as part of the investigation, although officers believe there could be more.

The gang earned its nickname after being caught on CCTV making their getaway on electric scooters.

Police say the suspects routinely used the vehicles to travel to their targets before making a rapid escape through the streets of Almeria.

Cash targeted during early-morning raids

The suspects allegedly selected businesses where they expected to find cash, generally striking during the early hours of the morning when premises were closed.

Doors, locks, cash registers and other security measures were forced open to gain access to the money inside.

Police say the group also operated with clearly defined roles.

While one member entered the premises and forced open security measures, others remained outside, keeping watch and providing support.

Detectives from the Provincial Judicial Police Brigade began connecting the different burglaries after identifying similarities in the way they had been carried out.

Their investigation eventually led them to the three suspects.

Officers also seized tools suspected of having been used during the break-ins, along with other items considered relevant to the investigation.

Adults sent to prison

Following their arrests, the two adult suspects were brought before a judge and remanded in custody.

The minor was ordered to be detained in a juvenile detention and rehabilitation centre.

All three are suspected of offences relating to burglary and membership of a criminal group.
