Rail services between Malaga and Sevilla have been suspended once again following the derailment of a maintenance train.

The incident on Tuesday morning has interrupted Media Distancia services linking the Andalucian capital with both Malaga and Cadiz.

Three Cercanias commuter lines in Sevilla – the C1, C4 and C5 – have also been affected.

Spanish rail infrastructure operator Adif said teams were working to resolve the incident.

‘Work is underway to restore traffic as soon as possible,’ it said on Tuesday.

The latest disruption comes just days after another incident brought services on Malaga’s C-2 Cercanias line to a halt for the whole of Saturday.

Saturday’s disruption occurred after a Malaga-Sevilla Media Distancia train struck a section of overhead electrical equipment that had become detached.

The train involved, service 13921 from Malaga Maria Zambrano to Sevilla Santa Justa, was stopped on its approach to Alora, in Malaga’s Guadalhorce Valley.

According to Adif, the overhead equipment had become detached following an incident connected to scheduled engineering works in the area.

The collision forced the suspension of the C-2 Cercanias service between Malaga and Alora throughout Saturday, before services were restored on Sunday.

Now, barely two days later, passengers face fresh disruption following the derailment of the maintenance convoy.

The incidents add to a series of problems affecting rail connections between Malaga and Sevilla this summer.

In July, Media Distancia services between the two cities were interrupted following damage to the track, forcing passengers to complete part of their journeys by bus.

High-speed services linking Andalucian cities have also suffered disruption following infrastructure and electrical incidents in recent months.

There was no immediate indication of how long Tuesday’s latest disruption would last.

Adif said work was continuing to restore normal rail traffic as quickly as possible.
