A bar in Torremolinos is facing a hefty fine after police uncovered what they say was an illegal bingo ‘operation’ attracting dozens of players every Sunday.
Officers from the Policia Nacional launched an investigation after receiving information that bingo games were being organised ‘without the necessary authorisation’.
Under the instructions of the Junta de Andalucia, police carried out surveillance and found more than 40 people taking part in a live bingo session inside the venue.
According to investigators, customers were handed bingo cards whenever they bought a drink, allowing them to join the games and compete for prizes ranging from cash to holidays.
Players could also take part digitally by scanning a QR code with their mobile phones and using an online app to mark off the numbers as they appeared on a television screen inside the bar.
Police believe the bingo nights were being used to draw in customers and boost trade, while ‘unfairly competing with licensed gambling venues’ that are required to comply with strict regulations.

Officers seized the equipment used to run the games and have submitted a proposal for sanctions over the alleged organisation of illegal gambling.
The case has now been passed to the Junta de Andalucia’s Gaming and Public Entertainment Service in Malaga, which will determine the size of any fine or other penalties.
