A 91-year-old man has died after being struck by a car driven by a man celebrating Spain’s victory over Belgium in the World Cup.

The tragedy unfolded in the Santa Quiteria neighbourhood of Lorca, Murcia, where the elderly victim was sitting outside his own home to enjoy the evening air when he was hit.

According to police, the driver lost control of his vehicle during the post-match celebrations, crashing into several parked cars before mounting the pavement and ploughing into the pensioner.

Witnesses alerted the emergency services after seeing the man lying unconscious on the ground.

Paramedics from the 061 emergency service rushed to the scene but were only able to certify the 91-year-old’s death.

The driver remained at the scene and subsequently tested positive for alcohol and drugs, according to sources close to the investigation.

He was arrested by officers and handed over to the Policia Nacional, who have launched an investigation. He is expected to face charges of causing death by gross negligence.

Lorca’s councillor for Citizen Security, Juan Miguel Bayonas, said the victim had been ‘sitting at the door of his own home, taking in the cool evening air’ when the collision occurred.

He added that a special police operation had already been deployed across the city for the Spain match, although the fatal crash happened in Santa Quiteria, away from the city centre where giant screens had been set up for supporters watching the game.
