A manhunt is underway for a driver who mowed down a woman in La Cala de Mijas before fleeing the scene.
The fatal collision happened at around 5.20am on the A-7 towards Marbella, according to emergency services.
Several motorists called 112 Andalucia after spotting the woman lying in the carriageway shortly after she had been hit.
One witness told operators that several drivers stopped to help the victim, but that the vehicle involved had continued without stopping.
Traffic officers from the Guardia Civil and paramedics from the 061 emergency service were dispatched to the scene. However, medics could only confirm the woman’s death.
The victim has so far not been formally identified, although authorities have confirmed she was a pedestrian, according to local newspaper La Opinion de Malaga.
The Guardia Civil has launched a judicial investigation and is working to trace the vehicle involved and identify the driver.
According to witness accounts, the suspect vehicle is believed to have been a large van or a lorry, although officers have not yet confirmed its exact type.
Investigators are appealing for anyone who was travelling on the A-7 through Mijas Costa at around 5.20am on Monday and may have witnessed the collision or captured footage on a dashcam to contact the Guardia Civil.
