Traffic is building across Andalucia and Spain as millions of people hit the roads for the first major getaway of the summer.

Spain’s traffic authority (DGT) launched its special summer operation at 3pm on Friday, with 4.83 million journeys expected to take place before the end of Sunday.

Motorists have already been warned to expect delays on some of the busiest routes in Andalucia, particularly around Malaga.

The worst congestion has been reported on the A-7, with slow-moving traffic affecting Rincon de la Victoria, Fuengirola, La Cala de Mijas and San Pedro de Alcantara.

Queues have also formed on the AP-7 near Torremolinos, with traffic heading towards Marbella.

Elsewhere in Andalucia, drivers leaving Sevilla have experienced delays on the A-4 at Dos Hermanas, while an accident on the A-92 near Alcala de Guadaíra has added to congestion.

The DGT expects more than 104 million road journeys across Spain during the summer holiday period, with three further major traffic operations planned around August 1, 15 and the end-of-summer return between August 28 and 31.

Drivers are also being reminded that this is the first summer in which vehicles are required to carry the new V-16 emergency warning beacon, which replaces traditional warning triangles in many roadside breakdown situations.

Throughout July and August, police will also carry out intensified roadside checks targeting speeding, drink and drug driving, while additional enforcement campaigns will focus on motorcyclists during busy summer weekends.
