A 25-year-old British man has died after suffering an accident while swimming off a beach in Murcia.
The tragic incident unfolded at around 4.05pm on Wednesday, when emergency services received reports of a swimmer struggling in the water off Playa de Percheles in Mazarron.
According to witnesses, two young British men raised the alarm after their friend struck rocks and was left unconscious in the sea.
The 112 emergency coordination centre dispatched Guardia Civil officers, Local Police, Civil Protection volunteers, firefighters and a 061 ambulance to the scene.
Before emergency crews arrived, several people managed to pull the man from the water.
Following instructions from a 061 nurse over the phone, bystanders began CPR, which was later continued by Guardia Civil and Local Police officers using specialist resuscitation equipment.
Paramedics from the 061 Emergency Unit took over treatment on arrival, but were ultimately unable to save the man.
Medical staff later confirmed his death at the scene.
Civil Protection workers erected a tent on the beach while authorities awaited the arrival of a forensic doctor and judicial officials.
An investigation into the the incident is ongoing.
