The final week of February is bringing an unexpected spike in temperatures across much of Spain, with unusually warm conditions for this time of year.
According to state weather agency Aemet, large areas of the country are experiencing almost spring-like weather, with clear skies, little to no rainfall and daytime highs climbing well above seasonal averages.
In parts of the Mediterranean and along the Cantabrian coast, temperatures are forecast to exceed 25C on Tuesday and Wednesday, in what AEMET spokesperson Ruben del Campo branded ‘exceptional’ for late February.
While early mornings remain chilly in some inland areas – with cities such as Cuenca seeing temperatures close to 0C at dawn – thermometers are rising dramatically during the day, reaching 20C to 22C within hours.
The sharp contrast between cold mornings and warm afternoons is one of the defining features of this spell.
Cities such as Bilbao and Oviedo could approach 25C, while Murcia may see highs of up to 27C, making this one of the warmest late-February periods in recent years.
Pockets of Andalucia could also see highs in the mid-20s this week, including 24C in Sevilla.
