An Irish couple have been found dead inside their home in southern Spain after neighbours reported a ‘strange smell’ coming from the property.

Fellow residents in Orihuela, on the southern Costa Blanca, raised the alarm at around 10.15am, telling Policia Local they had not seen any activity at the home for several days.

Arriving police officers found the front door partially open, before discovering the body of a man with a head injury, who is believed to have been dead for around a week.

Next to him was a woman who showed injuries to her torso and limbs. She was still alive when emergency services entered the property but died shortly afterwards. The ages of the couple have not been released.

Both were found semi-naked in one of the rooms. Police also noted the presence of food and drink containers.

The property is located on Avenida Escorpiones, a long through-road separating southern Torrevieja from the northern stretch of Orihuela’s coastline.

For now, investigators do not believe this is a case of domestic violence. No weapons were found inside the home and robbery is also not suspected.

Early indications suggest the man may have died of natural causes, with the woman, who reportedly had mobility or health limitations, unable to seek help.

However, the Guardia Civil’s Judicial Police unit, based in nearby Torre de la Horadada, is keeping alternative lines of inquiry open while they await conclusive forensic reports.
