A British mother and her newborn baby have been hospitalised in Spain following a premature birth during the chaotic blackout.
The holidaymaker gave birth in the lobby of a hotel in Torremolinos on the Costa del Sol, at around 3am this morning, it has emerged.
The hotel’s receptionist assisted the mother and performed CPR on the newborn, who had no pulse, reports local newspaper Diario Sur. The young woman is reportedly in her twenties and was staying at the hotel with family.
She is said to have approached reception mid-labour after her waters broke.
The receptionist tried to call a taxi and call 061, but there was no time and the woman gave birth in the garden by the hotel entrance.
The mother was only 13 weeks pregnant and the baby showed signs of suffocation upon being delivered.
The heroic receptionist performed CPR while being guided by emergency services over the phone, and the baby began to cough.
Paramedics raced to the scene and both the baby and mother were transported to the Maternal and Child Hospital in Malaga.
The baby was in a critical condition but had a pulse. Their current conditions are unknown.
