A father has died in front of his teenage son after they were mowed down while cycling on Spain’s Costa Blanca.

A large group of cyclists were hit on the N-332 road in Mascarat, while passing through Calp on Easter Sunday morning.

The father was reportedly sent flying off a cliff after being hit by the car.

The 20-year-old driver has been arrested for homicide, causing injury and violation of road safety, reports local newspaper Todo Alicante.

He was tested for drugs and alcohol, the results of which were not known at the time of reporting.

The tragedy unfolded at around 11.30am and saw a medical helicopter dispatched to the scene.
