AT least 10 flights have been cancelled in the Canary Islands following the arrival of Storm Nuria on Thursday.

Anyone due to travel to the archipelago is urged to check the status of their flight, with the entire collection of islands currently under a series of alerts for severe weather.

La Palma is expected to be the worst hit day, with state weather agency Aemet issuing a red alert – meaning there is an ‘extreme risk’ to safety.

A video shared on X this morning showed one resident filming from her beachside apartment in Santa Cruz de La Palma.

El frente asociado a la #BorrascaNuria ya está entrando por el NW palmero. Su influencia generará rachas de viento muy fuertes en zonas habituales de aceleración a viento de suroeste.

The clip shows how the skies have been turned a dark grey, with low hanging clouds reducing visibility.

Meanwhile, rain can be seen lashing down as the few remaining installations on the beach struggle to stay in place amid the fierce winds.

In La Palma, the worst of the winds will affect the whole eastern side of the island until 5pm local time.

In Tenerife, an orange alert for strong winds is active until 9.59pm, with gusts expected to reach 90km/hr.

The rest of the island is on a yellow alert over the same period, with winds of up to 70km/hr expected.

Gran Canaria is under a yellow advisory for strong gales of up to 70km/hr, affecting the east, south and west of the island.

Yellow warnings for rain are also in place in El Hierro and La Gomera.

In Lanzarote, a holiday hotspot for Brits, a yellow warning for winds of up to 70km/hr is in place until midnight.
