This is the moment a shark was filmed swimming in the waters off Marbella on the Costa del Sol.

The footage was recorded by Aqua Time Marbella, a local water sports and activities club.

It wrote in a caption: ‘Basking shark sighting off the coast of Marbella.

‘Never in our 35-year history have we seen anything like it!’

Basking sharks (Cetorhinus maximus) are not dangerous to humans despite their massive size – which can be up to an incredible 12 metres.

They are filter feeders, meaning they swim with their mouths wide open to consume plankton, not larger animals.

They have no interest in attacking people and are generally slow-moving and docile.

Basking sharks can be found in the waters around Spain, particularly in the Atlantic Ocean off the northern coast, and occasionally in the Mediterranean Sea.

Sightings are most common during the spring and summer months, when plankton levels are high.
