A desperate search is under way for a 73-year-old man who vanished after going for a walk in Estacion de Cartama on Sunday.

The missing man, named only as Jose, was last seen leaving his home early in the morning. His family raised the alarm after he failed to return and could not be contacted.

The operation is being coordinated by the Guardia Civil, with support from Local Police, Civil Protection and dozens of volunteers.

Searches continued until after 10pm on Monday, but were forced to stop when darkness and heavy rain made conditions unsafe.

Concern is growing as the hours pass, particularly due to the impact of Storm Leonardo, with the municipality currently under an orange weather alert.

According to municipal sources, Jose’s mobile phone is still ringing, but investigators have no indication of the direction he may have taken.

Search teams are therefore focusing on trying to locate the phone signal, in the hope it may help narrow down his possible whereabouts.

Anyone who has seen Jose or has information that could help is urged to contact the 112 hotline or local police on 092.

Authorities are asking residents to remain vigilant, especially in rural areas and near paths or waterways affected by recent heavy rain.
