The father of an 18-year-old La Liga football player is among the latest victims of the Cordoba train tragedy to be named.

David Cordon Cano, father of Getafe player Davinchi, had travelled to Madrid to watch his son’s team play against Valencia at the Coliseum – despite him sitting out due to a knee injury.

After the match, David boarded the doomed Alvia 2384 train in Madrid, which was bound for Huelva, but would collide with a derailed Iryo service in Adamuz, Cordoba, at 7.39pm on Sunday.

Davinchi confirmed that his father had died in a heartbreaking tribute posted to his Instagram page late on Tuesday night.

He wrote: ‘I know that the Lord of Sorrows and the Virgin of Love have you by their side, and together you will guide me throughout my life.

‘You will fill me with strength in times of difficulty, and I will always remember what you so often told us: always happy and moving forward.

‘Everything I do in this life will always be for the brightest star I have in the sky.

‘As someone once told me, ”When the going gets tough, only the tough make it,” you were always a fighter, and you taught me that from the very beginning.

‘That is the greatest act of love I can do for you: to show you that I can handle anything and that I will never give up. I LOVE YOU, DAD.’

In a post on X, Getafe CF said: ‘We deeply regret confirming the news we never wanted to share.

‘We are devastated by the death of David Cordon Cano, father of our player Davinci, in the tragic accident in Adamuz, Cordoba.

‘We met you seven months ago and in a short time you won us over with your simplicity, kindness, and generosity. We will miss you dearly! Rest in peace, dear friend.’

His family also shared the terrible news on social media.

‘We have been informed that they have found David and have given us the worst possible news,’ posted Julia de Mora, the footballer Davinchi’s aunt.

David played for the Spanish national beach soccer team, with whom he won the silver medals at the 2003 and 2004 World Championships and the 2001 and 2004 European Championships.

He was also named Euroleague Player of the Year in 2004.

His 18-year-old son, Davinchi, came up through the ranks at Recreativo de Huelva and last summer joined Getafe, the team with which he made his debut in La Liga and where he is currently recovering from a knee injury.
