Aerial footage shared by the Guardia Civil shows the devastating aftermath of the deadly Cordoba train crash.
At least 39 people are dead following the disaster, which occured at 7.39pm near the town of Adamuz on Sunday.
An Iryo train heading from Malaga to Madrid first derailed when its rear carriages overturned, for reasons still being investigated.
The cars crossed onto the opposite track, colliding with a Renfe Alvia train that was heading from Madrid to Huelva, according to Adif (Spain’s railway infrastructure manager).
The Guardia Civil and firefighters worked intensely at the scene overnight to evacuate all passengers and had set up a joint field hospital.
Footage taken from a helicopter on Monday morning showed multiple carriages of both trains completely turned over and severely damaged.
The Spanish royal family have said they will return to the country ‘as soon as possible’ to attend the site.
PM Pedro Sanchez said at around 1am: ‘Tonight is a night of deep pain for our country due to the tragic railway accident in Adamuz.
‘I want to express my most sincere condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims.
‘No words can alleviate such immense suffering, but I want them to know that the entire country stands with them in this extremely difficult moment.
‘All emergency services are working in a coordinated manner without rest.’
