Pedro Sanchez has issued his first statement following the fatal train crash in Cordoba.
At least 10 people have died after two high-speed trains collided near the entrance to Adamuz station.
Many others are injured and trapped after multiple carriages derailed and overturned.
Sanchez said in a post on X: ‘Very concerned about the accident between two high-speed trains that have derailed in Adamuz (Cordoba).
‘The Government is working with the rest of the competent authorities and emergency services to assist the passengers.’
In an update at 10.22pm, transport minister Oscar Puente wrote on X: ‘The latest information coming in is very serious.
‘The last units of the Iryo train heading toward Madrid have derailed, with those cars invading the opposite track where, at that moment, a Renfe train heading toward Huelva was traveling.
‘The impact has been terrible, causing the first two units of the Renfe train to be thrown off as a result.
‘The number of victims cannot be confirmed at this time. The fundamental priority now is to assist the victims.’
Earlier, Puente said he was at the headquarters of Adif, Spain’s national railway manager.
He wrote: I’ve been at the H24 of Adif for half an hour now, following the information on the serious train accident in Adamuz (Cprdoba).
‘I’ll keep updating here with any confirmed developments.’
An Iryo train heading from Malaga to Madrid first derailed at 7.39pm when its rear carriage overturned, for reasons yet unknown.
The car crossed onto the opposite track, causing another train, heading from Madrid to Huelva, to also derail, according to Adif (Spain’s railway infrastructure manager).
All rail services between Andalucia and Madrid have been suspended. Emergency services have been mobilised to the area.
