Sevilla experienced one of its hottest Septembers on record in 2026, new data has shown.
Temperatures averaged around four degrees above normal and the mercury exceeded 40C on four separate days.
The city recorded an average temperature of 28.7C during the month, compared with the 24.7C baseline used by climate-monitoring website Weather and Climate.
Aemet’s official climate normals for Sevilla Airport give a slightly higher September average of 25C, but the 2026 figure would still be approximately 3.7C above that benchmark.
Only one of the month’s 30 days was cooler than the average expected for that date.
On September 17, the maximum reached 31.3C, just 0.5C below the daily norm. Every other day recorded above-average maximum temperatures.
Four days above 40C
The most intense heat arrived during the first week of September.
The Sevilla Airport monitoring station recorded 44C on September 3, followed by 43.1C on September 4, 41C on September 6 and 40.9C on September 7.
On a further five days, temperatures either reached or came close to 39C.

The September 26 maximum of 38.6C was 7.6 degrees above the expected level for that point in the month.
Sevilla’s Tablada weather station recorded an even higher 45.1C on September 3, jointly the highest temperature measured anywhere in Spain during 2026 at that point, according to Aemet figures.
The 44C reading at Sevilla Airport was exceptional but did not surpass the station’s all-time September record of 44.8C, set on September 5, 2016.
‘Sleepless’ nights
Daily average temperatures exceeded 30C on 10 days, representing one-third of the month.
Night-time conditions also remained unusually warm.
The lowest minimum temperature of the month was 18.7C, recorded on September 22.
Minimums fell below 20C on just seven nights, remaining above that level during the other 23.
The most oppressive night followed the early-month heatwave, when the temperature failed to drop below 28.6C on September 5.
That was well above the threshold commonly associated with so-called ‘tropical nights’ and the even more extreme ‘equatorial nights’, when temperatures remain above 25C.
Just 0.5mm of rain
September was also considerably drier than usual.
The normal monthly rainfall in Sevilla is approximately 27mm to 33mm, depending on the reference period and monitoring station.
Just 0.5mm was recorded during September 2026, all of it falling on the 28th.
