Malaga province is set for a dramatic change in the weather next week, meteorologists have warned.

Temperatures could exceed 35C across inland areas on Friday, with Antequera forecast to reach 36C.

The heat will continue into Saturday before increasing cloud brings cooler conditions, showers and thunderstorms at the beginning of next week.

Antequera could see its maximum temperature fall from 36C on Friday to just 24C by Monday, a drop of 12 degrees.

The change will be less pronounced on the coast, with Malaga city expected to fall from around 31C to between 25C and 27C.

Rain expected on Monday

Aemet’s Andalucia representative, Juan de Dios del Pino, said cloud would begin moving across the province during the weekend.

Initially, these will be high clouds with little impact beyond shielding the province from some of the sun’s heat.

More widespread cloud is expected on Monday, when showers and thunderstorms could develop across Malaga province.

The highest probability of rain is in the far west and over elevated areas, although Aemet does not currently expect significant accumulations.

Further showers could return to mountainous areas on Wednesday, but these are also forecast to be light.

Overnight temperatures will change little and are expected to remain close to 20C along the coast, as cloud cover traps some of the heat accumulated during the day.

The weather should stabilise again during the first half of next week, with coastal temperatures remaining close to 30C and Antequera beginning to warm after Monday’s sharp drop.
