An Andalucian gem has become one of the five favourite destinations for Spanish tourists this September.

The stunning city ranks fifth among destinations booked by Spaniards for the month, according to an analysis by free-tour platform GuruWalk.

The jewel in question is Sevilla, the historic capital of the southernmost region.

Its position this year represents a significant jump after it ranked 13th in September 2023, fell to 16th in 2024 and recovered to 10th last year.

If current bookings translate into visits, 2026 will be the first time in four years that Sevilla has broken into the top five.

The figures also reveal a clear seasonal shift in the travel habits of Spaniards.

During the hottest months of July and August, Sevilla was absent from the leading destinations, with cities including Rome, Budapest, Porto, Prague, London and Amsterdam dominating bookings.

But that changes as the worst of the summer heat subsides.

By September, Madrid climbs to third place, Sevilla to fifth and Toledo to seventh, with all three Spanish destinations notably located away from the coast.

Belen Casanova, spokeswoman for GuruWalk, said the figures demonstrated there were effectively ‘two types of Spanish traveller’ during summer.

One favours coastal destinations during July and August, while another turns towards inland and southern cities ‘as soon as the peak heat subsides and visitor numbers fall’.

‘September is not a minor month,’ she added, saying destinations such as Madrid and Sevilla fit particularly well with what many travellers are seeking at that time of year.

In September 2025, 116,842 Spanish tourists visited Sevilla, an increase of 17.7% compared with August and more than 6% higher than September 2024, according to Sevilla City Office.

More than 39,000 came from elsewhere in Andalucia, while Madrid and Cataluña provided another 24,628 and 9,755 visitors respectively.
