Large parts of Andalucia have been placed under yellow weather warnings for thunderstorms and heavy rain on Saturday as a so-called DANA passes over the region.
State weather agency Aemet has activated alerts across several inland areas, warning that storms could bring very strong gusts of wind and hail.
The warnings will generally be in force between 2pm and 9.59pm, meaning the most unsettled conditions are expected during the afternoon and evening.
Some areas could receive as much as 25mm of rain in a single hour, raising the prospect of intense, localised downpours.
Among the areas facing the highest rainfall totals are Guadix and Baza in Granada province, the Almanzora Valley and Los Velez in Almeria, and Cazorla and Segura in Jaen, where Aemet is forecasting up to 25mm in one hour.
Warnings have also been issued for the Guadalquivir Valley in Jaen and the Genil basin, where rainfall could reach 20mm per hour.
Malaga among areas under warning
Parts of Malaga province are also affected, including Antequera and Ronda, where Aemet is forecasting up to 20mm of rain in an hour.
Both areas are under yellow alerts for rain and thunderstorms between 2pm and 9.59pm.
Aemet warns that the storms ‘may be accompanied by very strong wind gusts and hail’.
The Grazalema area of Cadiz and the Sierra Sur de Sevilla are meanwhile forecast to receive up to 15mm of rain in an hour, with thunderstorms also possible.
The warnings cover a broad swathe of Andalucia’s interior, although the Mediterranean coastline itself – including Malaga city, the Costa del Sol and Almeria city – is not shown under the same rain and storm alerts.
Heat warning for Cordoba
It won’t only be storms causing concern on Saturday.
Aemet has also activated a yellow warning for extreme heat in the Campiña Cordobesa, where temperatures are forecast to reach 38C.
That alert will run from 1pm until 8.59pm.
The combination means parts of Andalucia could experience another day of sharply contrasting summer weather, with intense heat in some areas and potentially violent thunderstorms in others.
The warnings come after torrential rain and hail battered parts of Jaen province on Thursday, producing dramatic flash flooding.
Cambil was among the worst-hit towns, where around 55 litres of rain fell in roughly an hour, turning streets into rivers, moving vehicles and flooding a number of ground-floor properties.
Campillo de Arenas and Huelma were also affected, with hailstones reportedly reaching around the size of marbles in some locations.
In Huelma, residents in outlying properties were temporarily left isolated after flooding affected a bridge.
