A Malaga doctor has revealed what will make you more appealing to mosquitoes – and it has nothing to do with having ‘sweet blood’.
In a video posted on TikTok, cardiologist Aurelio Rojas explained how there are certain things that attract the blood-sucking pests to their human prey.
‘The first thing they detect is the amount of CO2 you are breathing out,’ he says.
‘The more you produce, the easier it is for them to locate you.
‘For this reason, they usually bite more frequently those who have more muscle weight, those who have just done exercise, pregnant women and even people who have just eaten a high amount of carbohydrates.’
He added that people who have drunk alcohol are also more of a target, ‘especially beer drinkers.’
The second thing that attracts mosquitoes is body heat.
‘So if you’ve just worked out, been sunbathing or eaten a hot meal, your skin is warmer and this is a big sign for a mosquito.’
Rojas said perhaps the most surprising pull for a mosquito is ‘the smell of your skin.’
He explained that things like ‘lactic acid’ and many other acids and bacteria that live on your skin make some people much more attractive to mosquitoes.
‘These types of bacteria grow more on people who have more fat and who sweat more… they are like a Michelin restaurant for mosquitoes,’ he added.
