New details have emerged in the investigation into the death of 17-year-old Norwegian tourist Nikoline, who was killed in a hit-and-run on the A-7 motorway in Mijas.

Investigators now believe the teenager took an Uber for a short journey before asking the driver to let her out near the stretch of motorway where she was struck and killed.

It is not known why she left the vehicle before arriving to where she was staying.

The information has been reported by Norwegian media and confirmed to local Spanish outlets by sources close to the investigation.

Officers are working to identify the vehicle that fatally hit her, with early indications suggesting it was a lorry.

Speaking on Thursday, Malaga’s central government representative, Javier Salas, said investigators were examining ‘every detail’ of the case and expressed confidence that the Guardia Civil investigation would ‘bear fruit’.

One of the key questions had been how the teenager travelled from the last place she was seen – Puerto Banus – to the point on the A-7 where the collision occurred.

Salas also highlighted that Nikoline was identified quickly thanks to the missing person report filed by her family with the Policia Nacional earlier that day.

The teenager was not carrying any ID when she was struck, but the report enabled officers to rapidly match her identity and speed up the investigation.

Nikoline had travelled to Marbella for a holiday with her stepfather. She watched Norway’s World Cup match against Brazil on July 5, which ended in a Norwegian victory.

After the game, she went out celebrating with friends to Funky Buddha in Puerto Banus, before disappearing in the early hours of the morning.

Her mother reported her missing after she could no longer contact her.

The teenager’s death has caused widespread grief in Norway.

Nicolai Østeby, president of Norway’s Young Conservatives, paid tribute to Nikoline, describing her as ‘committed, brave and enthusiastic’.

‘The support we have received over the last few days has been overwhelming,’ he said.

‘She was always willing to help others. Nikoline cared deeply about the people around her and had an infectious smile that lit up every room.

‘Above all, she had a big heart and meant so much to so many people.’

The Guardia Civil has not made any arrests and continues to appeal for information that could help identify the driver who fled the scene.
