Brits planning to watch England’s late-night clash against Mexico have been warned they could face fines of up to €1,500 if post-match celebrations become too noisy.
Benalmadena’s Local Police have urged football fans to celebrate responsibly after receiving numerous complaints about late-night noise.
The international matches are being played in the US, with the time difference meaning many games finish in the early hours of the morning in Spain.
‘The passion for football brings us together. Respect for people’s rest should too,’ the force said in a message posted on social media.
While congratulating supporters enjoying their national teams’ success, officers reminded residents that Benalmadena is a ‘multicultural city’ where thousands of people from different countries live side by side.
‘Behind every window are babies, elderly people, those who are ill, workers who have to get up early and children with special needs whose sleep has been disrupted by late-night celebrations,’ the statement said.
Police stressed that celebrations should not come at the expense of neighbours’ right to a peaceful night’s sleep.
Under Benalmadena’s Citizen Coexistence Ordinance, noise must be kept to a minimum between 10pm and 8am.
Anyone breaching the rules could face fines of up to €750, while more serious offences carry penalties ranging from €751 to €1,500.
The warning comes ahead of England’s match against Mexico, which is due to kick off late on the Costa del Sol because of the time difference with North America, meaning celebrations could continue well into the early hours if the Three Lions win.
Police said fans should continue enjoying the tournament – but urged everyone to do so in a way that respects fellow residents and avoids disturbing the neighbourhood overnight.
