Almeria is once again transforming into a Hollywood-style film set as production gets underway on Amazon’s highly anticipated new Tomb Raider series.
The blockbuster adaptation is filming in some of the province’s most iconic landscapes, including the dramatic Sierra Alhamilla and the famous Tabernas Desert, long regarded as Europe’s answer to the Wild West.
The project marks the latest chapter for Lara Croft, the legendary adventurer first created for the hugely successful video game franchise.
This time, the iconic archaeologist will be played by British star Sophie Turner, best known for her role in Game of Thrones, taking over a role made famous on the big screen by Angelina Jolie.
She will be joined by Hollywood veteran Sigourney Weaver, whose decades-long career includes starring in the sci-fi classic Alien.
A large production operation has already moved into the El Chorrillo area of Sierra Alhamilla, where crews are constructing extensive sets for the shoot.
The location is no stranger to major productions. It previously featured in Exodus: Gods and Kings, directed by Ridley Scott, and was also used for the latest instalment of The Mummy.

The series represents a major investment by Amazon MGM Studios, which hopes to turn one of gaming’s most recognisable characters into a global television hit.
The project is being written by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, the award-winning creator of Fleabag.
Filming in Almeria is expected to last around three weeks, with the series currently slated for release in 2027.
