A 60-year-old ‘foreign resident’ has been shot in the head during a horrific gun rampage in Almeria that also left two people dead – including the suspected gunman’s own mother.

The attack unfolded late on Monday night in the El Canalillo area of El Ejido and has left Almeria reeling after details of the bloodbath emerged.

Police say the alleged shooter, a 25-year-old Spanish man with a lengthy criminal record, opened fire on multiple victims before being arrested hours later following a huge manhunt involving drones and heavily armed officers.

According to El Ejido mayor Francisco Gongora, the suspect had ‘at least 16 previous offences and infractions’ linked to knives, drugs and drug trafficking.

Investigators also believe the man suffers from schizophrenia and was not licensed to possess firearms, according to local newspaper Diario de Almeria.

The violence erupted shortly after 11pm when emergency services received reports of repeated gunshots in the neighbourhood near Balanegra.

When officers from the Guardia Civil and Local Police arrived, they discovered a car riddled with bullet holes in the middle of the street.

Inside were the bodies of the suspect’s mother and stepfather, both fatally shot. But the carnage did not end there.

Also inside the vehicle had been the alleged gunman’s partner or ex-partner alongside their seven-month-old baby boy.

The woman reportedly managed to escape the vehicle, but the infant suffered devastating gunshot wounds to the jaw and skull and remains in critical condition in intensive care.

In another horrifying moment, a 19-year-old neighbour reportedly stepped outside holding her young daughter after hearing the gunfire.

The suspect allegedly opened fire on them too.

The young mother suffered three gunshot wounds to the chest and abdomen and remains in a serious condition in hospital.

Her daughter, believed to be around two years old, was also seriously injured after being shot in the chest.

During his attempted escape, the suspect allegedly encountered a 60-year-old foreign resident and shot him directly in the head without warning.

The victim, whose nationality has not been revealed, underwent emergency surgery and remains in intensive care in critical condition.

Authorities launched a massive overnight operation to locate the suspect, deploying specialist Guardia Civil units, local police officers and thermal imaging drones to comb nearby fields and open land.

The search ended around 4am when the suspect allegedly returned to El Canalillo and was surrounded by armed officers before being arrested.

Police say the investigation is being treated as a case of domestic violence rather than gender violence.

The town of El Ejido has declared an official day of mourning following the tragedy.

Mayor Gongora also used the incident to call for tougher action against organised crime, illegal weapons and drug trafficking in the area.

‘There are neighbourhoods where marginal groups carry firearms openly and generate extreme danger,’ he warned.

‘All possible measures must be taken to eradicate this dangerous breeding ground that leads to irreversible tragedies like the one we are mourning today.’
