Allergy sufferers in Andalucia are being warned to brace for a tough spring with experts predicting exceptionally high pollen levels nationwide.
According to the Sociedad Española de Alergología e Inmunología Clínica, this spring could see some of the highest concentrations in recent years, especially from grass pollen.
In Andalucia, the situation varies depending on location:
- Sevilla and Jaen are among the hardest hit, with levels expected between 6,000 and 8,000 grains per cubic metre
- Cordoba, Granada, Huelva and Cadiz will see moderate levels
- Malaga and Almeria are expected to have lower concentrations, but still enough to trigger symptoms
Elsewhere in Spain, some areas are forecast to exceed 10,000 grains/m3 showing just how intense this pollen season could become.
Experts say recent rains have created the perfect conditions for high pollen counts.
While showers temporarily reduce pollen in the air, they also boost plant growth, leading to a much heavier pollen release later on.
Combined with climate change and pollution, it creates what specialists describe as a ‘perfect storm’ for allergies.
With multiple types of pollen circulating at once, sufferers may experience more intense and longer-lasting symptoms, including sneezing and congestion, itchy eyes and throat and breathing difficulties.
In Spain, allergies already affect up to 35% of the population, a figure expected to rise to 50% in the coming years.
Experts are urging people to take precautions now, even before symptoms begin:
- Avoid drying clothes outside, as fabrics trap pollen
- Open windows only early morning or late evening
- Limit outdoor exercise in parks during peak pollen hours
- Wear sunglasses and FFP2 masks if necessary
- Start preventive medication early, especially if you’re highly sensitive
