An Irishman has been hospitalised after being allegedly punched by a taxi driver in Fuengirola.
The 65-year-old fell to the ground and hit his head on the pavement, causing serious head injuries.
The alleged attack happened on the Paseo Maritimo Rey de España on February 23, but has only just come to light.
Emergency services were alerted to reports of an injured man lying in the street following an assault.
The 112 Andalucía control centre immediately dispatched paramedics and officers from the Policia Nacional.
When officers from the Prevention and Response Unit (UPR) arrived, they found two elderly Irish men, believed to have been drinking.
One of them had suffered a deep head wound requiring stitches and was bleeding heavily from the nose.
According to sources, the taxi driver allegedly threw the pair out of the vehicle after one of them burped.
Once outside, the driver is accused of punching the 65-year-old, causing him to fall backwards and strike his head on a kerb.
Although the victim was initially taken to the Las Lagunas health centre in Mijas, he was later transferred to the Costa del Sol Hospital due to the severity of his injuries.
Police have confirmed that the 51-year-old taxi driver was arrested on suspicion of causing bodily harm.
