A popular priest has been killed in a horror traffic collision in Mijas.
Jose Amalio Gonzalez, 54, is believed to have died instantly when he was thrown off his motorcycle on the A-7053 at around 11.20am on Thursday.
His motorbike was involved in a head-on collision with two other vehicles, reports Diario Sur.
Emergency services rushed to the scene after witnesses reported that one person was trapped.
Paramedics could only confirm the death of Father Jose Amalio, while two other people were taken to hospital.
The news spread rapidly through Coin, where the priest had served for years at the town’s main church, San Juan.
The town council has declared official mourning for Friday and cancelled events planned for Saturday’s Andalucía Day celebrations.
He also celebrated Mass in Villafranco del Guadalhorce, a district of Alhaurin el Grande.
According to local reports, the priest was deeply loved in the community, and was known for his warmth, openness and close relationship with young people.
Many described him as approachable, dynamic and always present for his parishioners.
