Intense snowfall has sparked chaotic scenes in parts of Andalucia this weekend.

The Sierra Nevada ski resort in Granada was forced to close off most of its slopes on Sunday due to poor visibility.

It has since issued an avalanche warning, after the threat of such an event was raised to a four out of a maximum five.

The ski resort said: ‘The successive snowfalls recorded over recent days have created a situation of very high avalanche risk in the surrounding area and across different zones of the ski resort.

‘The ski and mountain resort strongly recommends avoiding any activity outside the ski area open to the public and beyond the pistes marked each day. Please respect all signage.’

Meanwhile, the A395 access road to the resort has been completely closed off from Cenes de la Vega due to the heavy snow.

Elsewhere, in the neighbouring province of Jaen, 10 people became trapped by the snow in the Sierra de Cazorla.

Footage shared on X showed various people, including several children, being rescued by a Guardia Civil helicopter.

It comes after Jaen and inland Granada were placed on yellow alerts for heavy snow on both Saturday night and Sunday.

The harsh conditions have been brought by Storm Ingrid, the latest front to bring wintry conditions across the country.

The hills of Malaga province have also seen a high amount of snowfall this weekend, particularly in the Sierra Bermeja in Estepona and the Sierra Blanca.

The MeteoGuadalhorce account on X warned would-be hikers in Malaga: ‘If you’re heading up these days, take caution; we’re PROFESSIONALS, the conditions are very adverse and tricky.’

The wintry conditons are expected to last for at least another week, with rain forecast for much of Andalucia almost every day.
