This is the moment a man was rescued from an elevator in Spain after becoming trapped for more than five hours during Monday’s historic blackout.

The resident of Valladolid, near Madrid, was returning home after going to the supermarket when he became stuck.

In a video shared by emergency services, firemen are seen using a hammer to bash through the wall of the elevator.

Once the hole becomes big enough, they pull him through to safety and the man is seen smiling with relief.

Other locals in Spain recalled how they became trapped in elevators during the ‘unprecedented’ power outage.

A young mother named Ana shared a photo on X showing her son curled up on the floor of their building’s lift.

She said they became stuck along with her mother when the power suddenly cut at 12.33pm yesterday.

She wrote: ‘My mother, my son, and I were caught in the elevator by the power outage.

Nos ha pillado el apagón en el ascensor, mi madre, mi hijo y yo. Lo de llamar a los servicios de emergencia y que no haya cobertura ni servicios de emergencia no lo deseo a nadie 🥹. ‘I wouldn’t wish it on anyone to call emergency services and find there was no signal.’

She said they were finally freed by neighbours who forced open the doors, allowing them to climb out.

In the Basque Country, six children and a pregnant woman were trapped in an elevator in Eibar for more than three hours.

Another man in Bilbao was stuck for two-and-a-half hours.
