The family of a Scotsman who vanished from Portugal a week ago say they have been ‘totally overwhelmed’ by the support from people assisting with the search.

Greg Monks, 38, disappeared on the first night of a stag do with friends in the resort of Albufeira last Tuesday.

He was later picked up on CCTV, walking down a street several kilometres away from his accommodation, at around 3am the following Wednesday morning.

In a post on Facebook today, his sister Jillian said the family have received no meaningful updates on the case.

She wrote: ‘The GNR advised yesterday evening the case would now be dealt with by Policia Judiciaria. At present we have had no contact yet.

‘British Embassy in Portugal has said they will arrange a meeting asap, but unsure how long that will take to be set up.

‘My family are continuing to search the area he was last seen until we have an update otherwise. We appreciate everyone’s help and support searching the area…

‘We appreciate all of the help and advice everyone has provided and we are trying to navigate all of this to put in place… unfortunately until we receive updates from the authorities we are working with very limited information.

‘Totally overwhelmed by all the support from everyone.’

Jillian shared a new photo of Greg showing his face very clearly, as well as a picture of his sleeve tattoo.

An image shared by Greg’s family on social media over the weekend shows him heading out with friends on the night he disappeared.

Greg had been staying at the Novochoro Apartments, a tourist apartment complex containing 31 units.

But in an ‘important update’ on Sunday night, his sister Jillian said he had been picked up on CCTV heading in opposite direction of his accommodation.

She said: ‘Greg has been seen on CCTV going further in the opposite direction of his accommodation.

‘This was still in early hours of Wednesday, nothing more recent… We need to share this to get to the people of this area to please look and hopefully once the police have done their searches to help search this area! Or any rescue assistance with drones etc.’

The area where he was last traced to is an upmarket neighbourhood filled with luxury villas.

It is also a 12-minute drive from the Novochorro apartments where Greg was staying.

It continues to be in the area of Cerro de Aguia, where Jillian said over the weekend that police were focusing their search.

She said: ‘As previously stated this is so unlike Greg and we are truly desperate for answers.

‘I am now seeking help from residents of the Cerro de Aguia area to please check any home cameras or doorbell footage between 2am and 5am, as police believe he was in the area around this time.’

She urged anyone with cameras that cover any part of the area to get in touch with her via Facebook, leaving their name and phone number.
