Spain could record its hottest May since records began thanks to ‘extraordinary’ temperatures this week.

According to state weather agency Aemet, the freak episode of extreme heat will occur between May 29 and June 1.

The crack meteorologists said the mercury will likely be at its highest for this time of year since at least 1950.

It said in a report that the heat blast will cause temperatures of up to 7C higher than usual across Spain.

It comes as several heat alerts come into effect from 1pm today, including in Catalonia and Andalucia.

In Sevilla, where an orange warning is in place, highs are expected to reach 39C, while in Cordoba and Jaen, temperatures could reach 38C.

In Catalonia, highs of 36C are expected in both Lleida and Tarragona, which are on a yellow alert.

Meanwhile, experts have also noted the early arrival of tropical nights, which is when minimum temperatures don’t fall below 20C.

The areas most affected by this phenomenon will be the Mediterranean region and the Ebro Valley, with a particular impact between Thursday, May 29 and Saturday, May 31.

During these dates, temperatures are also expected to reach levels between 5C and 10C above normal.
