Brits are demanding a better police presence following the brutal mugging of an expat on the Costa Blanca.

David Homer was attacked while walking home in the Las Ramblas area of Orihuela Costa on the night of Friday, April 18.

The expat claimed he was followed along the canal and pounced upon by two men who jumped out of a gap in a hedge. They allegedly beat him with a wooden object and slashed his head open with a knife.

He was forced to have stitches on his forehead and had been left shaken up by the incident.

David told the Spanish Eye today: ‘I’ll get there physically, I’m healing well.

‘It may take slightly longer mentally, although I’m quite strong as a person. Just bloody mad about it.’

Now, the local political party, Partido Independencia Orihuela Costa PIOC, is calling on Brits to pressure local authorities into action. It comes amid a wave of reported muggings and robberies in the area.

They have organised a meeting at the local town hall on May 5, urging all residents to attend to ‘show your discontent at the lack of policing in our area.’

In a video shared by the group, David recalled the attack, explaining: ‘I was walking home after my birthday celebrations, and I wasn’t drunk, and I was attacked from behind…

‘The first one hit me over the head with a wooden stick, and I hit him, but his mate slashed me with a knife, or a blade… which caused a lot of bleeding and I couldn’t see.

‘Then I was on the floor and he was kicking me, and they wanted my phone, and they wanted my wallet…

‘Mentally, it has affected me and mentally, I’m not in a too good place at the minute… physically, I’ll get better, mentally, it will take a bit longer.’

David said he ‘believes’ the attackers he saw were of Moroccan or north African origin.

He said he was ‘disgusted’ after having to wait until Monday to report the crime, because the police station was closed. He claimed that while at the station, four other muggings were being reported.

He fumed: ‘How can this be happening when we are supposed to be living in Spain, enjoying ourselves in the sunshine, it’s terrible.

‘The services are terrible, rubbish is piling up, there’s weeds everywhere, there’s no police presence, squatters can go into anyone’s house and they’ve got more rights than anyone else.

He accused Orihuela City Council of not doing enough to ‘protect’ or ‘look after’ the local community in Orihuela Costa.
