A new study has ranked Spain as the number one country for Americans to retire to in 2025.

The report by the Global Intelligence Unit (GIU) praised the Mediterranean country for its affordable cost of living and low crime rates, among other factors.

Spain topped the list of 16 countries studied, and was followed by Portugal, Costa Rica and Uruguay.

Filling out the top 10 were Mexico, New Zealand, Italy, Canada, Ireland and France.

The GIU said Spain had the second-best healthcare service in the world thanks to its accessibility and quality.

Meanwhile, its relatively cheaper cost of living make daily expenses and home rentals far more affordable than in the United States.

Spain was also praised for its safety, thanks to its low crime rates, particularly in smaller towns and cities.

American moving to the country will also find it relatively easy to integrate with the population and be accepted – although the country ranked 7th out of 16 for this metric.

Elsewhere, its climate ranked 5th, owing to its warm summers and mild winters, particularly in the south.

In terms of the best locations for Americans, the GIU recommends the city of Madrid, which it said offers a mix of cosmopolitan living and historic charm.

According to the report, city centre rentals cost around €1,200 for one-beds, falling to around €900 outside the city centre – while monthly expenses were estimated to be around $2,000 and $2,500.

For those wanting beach locations, the GIU recommends popular holiday locations including Valencia, Alicante and Malaga.
