A British expat has issued a warning to any of his compatriots planning a move to Spain.

The advice was issued by John, who has been based on the Costa Blanca for many years.

He uses his TikTok channel ‘English John in Costa Blanca’, to help prospective residents take the plunge and make the move themselves.

Adopting a dog in Spain? Know this ‘3-3-3’ rule, insists expat-run shelter after ‘beautiful’ pup is ‘heartbreakingly’ returned

In one of his recent videos, he says that anyone coming to the country should not do so without a job lined up.

He said: ‘Finding a job here is HARD, especially if you don’t speak fluent Spanish.

‘This is the part nobody tells you: Unemployment is high, wages are low, employers rarely sponsor foreigners, most roles require fluent Spanish and CVs from abroad are often ignored.’

He said that Spain is not a country to move to ‘and then figure it out.’

The relocation expert said those who succeed typically arrive with a remote job, a large amount of savings or passive income, or with retirement plans.

He warned that turning up without a plan is how people ‘burn through savings, get stuck in illegal work, make tax and residency mistakes’ and ‘end up having to leave again.’
