A noted health expert has issued some advice about what tuna to buy at supermarkets in Spain.

Professional nutritionist Blanca Garcia (@blancanutri on Instagram), explained in a video that certain types of the packaged fish meat contain higher levels of mercury.

She told her 1.6million followers that if they are buying canned tuna, to opt for ‘atun’ and not ‘atun claro’, as the latter contains more traces heavy metals (like mercury).

‘If you can’t find those simply labeled “atun” (as they are not as common), try not to consume it excessively,’ she warned.

Garcia added that ‘if possible, choose tuna packaged in glass jars rather than cans’.

The advice may not be applicable to everyone, given that the glassed tuna comes at a significantly higher price.

But does it matter how the tuna is stored?

According to Garcia, ‘natural’ or pickled in oil are both good options (but the former is the best).

‘Pickled in oil is a good option,’ she said, ‘it usually contains added vinegar and sunflower oil, but don’t worry, the amount of sunflower oil is minimal.’

She said that if you are buying tuna stored in oil, extra virgin olive oil is best.

Garcia also recommended that you don’t eat more than two cans of tuna per week.
