Storm Emilia wrought havoc across southern Spain on Sunday after sparking dozens of weather alerts.

Footage shared online from Almeria and Murcia showed severe hail stones crashing onto balconies, while some roads had been turned into rivers due to flooding.

Elsewhere, buckets of snow were seen falling in the mountains of Granada, in good news for the Sierra Nevada ski resort. A healthy coat of the white stuff was also pictured in high areas of inland Almeria.

In inland Almeria, the AL-8106 road was cut off due to the overflowing of the Almanzora river in Villaricos.

‘We recommend exercising extreme caution when traveling by road due to the adverse weather conditions,’ the Diputacion de Almeria warned in a post on X.

The message was posted with a video that showed a section of the AL-8106 submerged by the river.

The most serious red warning was in place in the Almanzora and Los Velez valleys in inland Almeria on Sunday.

Accoring to state weather agency Aemet, up to 120mm of rain per square metre were predicted to fall in 12 hours.

The coast of Almeria was also on a yellow warning for heavy rain, while other inland areas of Andalucia were on a more serious orange alert, including the Guadix and Baza regions of Granada.

Meanwhile, the entire southern coast of Andalucia, including the Costa del Sol, was placed on a yellow alert for rough sea conditions.

Aemet predicted waves of up to four metres and strong gusts of wind of up to 60km/hr.
