A sudden and intense storm struck eastern Granada province on Friday, unleashing up to 60 litres of rain per square metre in under an hour and leaving a trail of destruction in its wake.

The downpour hit hardest in the town of Illora, where local emergency services recorded around 15 separate incidents, all linked to flooding caused by water accumulation.

‘It only lasted 20 minutes, but it was terrifying,’ said one resident to local newspaper Ideal.

According to Andalucia’s 112 emergency service, more than 10 homes and garages were flooded after rainwater surged down streets such as Mariana Pineda, Avenida García Lorca, Callejón de la Laguna and Camino de Peñagorda.

Two roads in the area – the A-336 between Íllora and Pinos Puente, and the GR-4403 leading to Puerto Lope – had to be closed to traffic due to dangerous levels of standing water.

Despite the intensity of the storm, no injuries have been reported.
