Potentially deadly shooting is thwarted in Marbella: Armed man was ‘driving erratically’

Officers discovered a Sig Sauer, a semi-automatic pistol designed in Switzerland and produced in Germany

Police in Marbella stopped a potentially deadly shooting this week, it is believed, just days after a shootout in Estepona left an innocent bystander injured.

Three French nationals believed to be linked to the lethal Mocro Maffia have been arrested in the Costa del Sol resort over the past few days, according to the Policia Nacional.

The force said two vehicles were stopped and found to be carrying firearms, one of which was fully loaded and ready to fire, with the serial number erased to hide its origin.

The vehicles were stopped on two different occasions but just 24 hours apart.

In one case, officers discovered a Sig Sauer, a semi-automatic pistol designed in Switzerland and produced in Germany.

It was loaded with seven rounds, a cartridge in the chamber and the serial number was removed, suggesting the user did not want it to be traced back to them. In other words, it was ready to be used in a shooting or crime.

Luckily, if anything was being planned, it was stopped at around 8.30am on Monday after police noticed the carrier of the gun driving an Audi A3 at high speed on Avenida del Prado while making ‘suspicious manoeuvres’.

Officers on motorbikes signalled at the driver to pull over but they were ignored and the car sped away in an attempt to flee.

The driver and passenger got out of the car and threw the gun under another car, while the latter – who police said appeared intoxicated – attempted in vain to hide behind a truck.

The two Frenchmen, aged 24 and 28, were arrested for alleged illegal possession of weapons and taken to the Policia Nacional headquarters in Marbella.
