Dozens of towns and cities in Spain have been placed under heat warnings on Tuesday.
The alerts, by state weather agency Aemet, cover the majority of central and southern Spain, including Andalucia and the whole of Madrid.
The provinces of Sevilla, Cordoba and Jaen are under an orange warning, as temperatures are expected to reach 41C.
According to Aemet, the hottest time of day will be between 1pm and 4pm, but the alerts will remain active until 9pm.
Other parts of Andalucia are on a less serious yellow warning for heat, meaning maximum temperatures of 39C.
These include Antequera in Malaga, the interior of Granada and Cadiz and southern parts of Cordoba and Jaen.
Also on a yellow alert are the whole of Madrid, Badajoz, Merida, Guadalajara, Cuenca, Ciudad Real, Caceres, Toledo, Albacete and elsewhere.
