Spain’s Royal Family have spoken of their excitement ahead of the country’s World Cup final against Argentina in New Jersey.

King Felipe VI, Queen Letizia, Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofia travelled together to support La Roja, marking the first time all four have attended a match involving Spain’s senior men’s team.

They took their seats alongside US President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump in the VIP box before kick-off.

Speaking to reporters shortly before entering the stadium, King Felipe said the final brought together two countries with deep cultural and historic ties.

‘I think we are heading into a spectacular final between two brotherly countries with two incredible teams,’ he said.

‘It will be a great spectacle, and we hope it falls our way.’

Queen Letizia said the Royal Family had been thrilled by Spain’s performances throughout the tournament and insisted only one task remained.

‘We are excited about Spain, about how the World Cup is going and how our national team is playing,’ she said.

‘Those who understand football have already said everything. All that remains is to win.’

She added that the tournament had created a rare moment of national unity.

‘The important thing is that all of us together can recognise ourselves in that same joy,’ she said.

Princess Leonor, smiling alongside her parents and younger sister, highlighted the significance of attending as a family.

‘We are very happy to be here, all four of us together,’ she said.

The appearance represents a major show of support from the Spanish Crown on one of the biggest nights in the country’s sporting history.

King Felipe has regularly attended Spain matches during his reign, but Queen Letizia and Princess Leonor had never previously watched the senior men’s side in person as queen and heir to the throne.
