A British pensioner was violently robbed in the Mar Menor just days before an 80-year-old woman was left with fractured eye sockets in a brutal mugging that shocked the region.
The Brit, in his 70s, had a thick gold chain ripped from his neck while on holiday in Santiago de la Ribera.
It is the same area where an 80-year-old woman was brutally mugged and thrown to the ground, causing her to fracture both eye sockets.
The alleged robbery against the Brit happened as he was entering the apartment block where he was staying.
‘He ripped a thick gold chain from around my cousin’s neck as they were entering the grounds of the apartment block,’ his relative and British expat, David Christopher, told the Spanish Eye.
The victim, who has since returned to the UK, reported the incident to the Guardia Civil.
‘It’s getting more and more violent’
David said news of the brutal attack on an 80-year-old Spanish woman immediately reminded him of what happened to his cousin, with the description of the attacker sounding similar.
The woman was allegedly punched to the ground during a robbery and suffered multiple facial fractures, including broken eye sockets.
The assailant was alleged to be of North African descent, but this has yet to be confirmed.
‘This person or persons really need to be caught,’ David said.
‘I know it’s always more prevalent at this time of year, but it’s getting more and more violent.’
He also described witnessing attempted theft while shopping at Mercadona Plaza Molena in San Javier last weekend.
‘There were two guys in their late teens or early twenties watching people reaching into the fridges,’ he said.
‘One of them tried to put his hand into a lady’s bag. I alerted staff and they fled.’
‘They need to be caught’
David said the suspect description released following the attack on the Spanish pensioner sounded similar to the man who robbed his cousin, although there is no evidence at this stage that the incidents are linked.
‘I hope they find whoever did this to that elderly lady before they get the chance to do it again,’ he said.
The Guardia Civil continues to investigate both incidents.
