A man has been arrested after allegedly launching a random axe attack in the Granada village of Montefrío, leaving three people injured – one of them seriously.
The suspect, 45, is a North African migrant farm worker living in the area, reports Spanish newspaper OK Diario, citing Guardia Civil sources.
He allegedly struck in broad daylight at around 11am on Monday.
According to reports, the attacker first targeted a man in his 70s, who tried to defend himself using a walking stick.
He then turned on two women who had shouted at him during the assault. One of them is understood to be in a serious condition.
Emergency services rushed to the scene, with victims treated on site before being taken to hospital.
The suspect fled and hid in nearby olive groves, prompting a major search operation involving the Guardia Civil.
He was later located and arrested, and is expected to appear before a judge in the coming hours.
The incident has shaken Montefrio, a quiet inland town in the province of Granada.
Some residents claimed to OK Diario that tensions have been building in recent months, particularly linked to seasonal agricultural workers living in the area.

Locals are reportedly planning a protest following the attack.
The incident has also triggered a political response, with hard-right party Vox condemning the assault and linking it to wider concerns about security and migration.
The investigation continues.
