A young woman left paralysed after a devastating fall is set to die by euthanasia this week after a long and bitter court fight with her own father.
Noelia, 25, from Barcelona, has spent nearly two years fighting for the right to end her life after a fall from a fifth floor left her paraplegic and in constant suffering.
Her case has gripped Spain, not least because her father has tried repeatedly to stop the process, taking the fight through every possible court.
Despite his efforts, judges at every level have ruled in her favour, confirming she meets the legal requirements for euthanasia and has the capacity to make the decision herself.
The battle began in July 2025 when her father challenged the decision by a Catalan oversight body that had approved her request.
While one court initially ruled he had no standing to intervene, higher courts later allowed him to appeal but ultimately rejected his claims.
Spain’s Supreme Court and Constitutional Court both refused to block the procedure, and this week the European Court of Human Rights also declined to intervene, clearing the final obstacle.
Judges have consistently found that Noelia suffers from a ‘serious and incurable condition’ causing ‘chronic and debilitating suffering’, meeting the criteria under Spanish law.
Her mother has also struggled with the decision but says she will stand by her daughter.

‘Even if I don’t agree, I will always be by her side,’ she said. ‘If she doesn’t want to live, I can’t take any more.’
Noelia herself has been clear about her wishes.
‘No one in my family agrees, but a parent’s happiness cannot come before a daughter’s life,’ she told Antena 3.
‘I just want to go in peace and stop suffering.’
Spain legalised euthanasia in 2021, allowing adults with serious and incurable conditions to request assisted death under strict safeguards.
Now, after months of legal challenges, Noelia’s case is set to conclude on March 26, when her final wish will be carried out.
