The mayor of Rota has warned that the Cadiz town cannot imagine a future without the American naval base, describing it as ‘vital’ for both the local economy and international security.
Javier Ruiz Arana told Andalucia Informacion the presence of the US military installation remains fundamental to the area, insisting that any idea of closing or relocating it would be unthinkable and an ‘economic disaster.’
Speaking about the growing international tensions surrounding the conflict with Iran and the debate over the use of US bases in Spain, the mayor said daily life in Rota continues ‘with normality’.
Despite the geopolitical debate, he stressed that the town has not experienced any unusual activity in recent weeks.
According to Ruiz Arana, movements of ships and aircraft at the base remain part of its normal day-to-day operations.
He explained that the local council is not informed about the details of military movements, as those matters are handled directly between the Spanish Navy and the US Navy.
Spain’s government has already made clear that the bases at Rota and Moron (Sevilla) will not be used for military operations related to the Iran conflict.

For the mayor, the central issue is not the current tensions but the long-term importance of the base for the region.
He warned that the economic consequences of losing the US presence would be devastating.
The base generates an estimated €600 million in economic activity and supports between 10,000 and 12,000 jobs across the Bay of Cadiz area.
Because of that, Ruiz Arana said calls from some political groups to close the bases show a lack of understanding about their importance.
He described such proposals as unrealistic and disconnected from the reality of the region.
The mayor also highlighted the strategic value of Rota for the United States.
Located near the Strait of Gibraltar, the base serves as a key entry point for American forces heading toward Europe, the Mediterranean and the Middle East.
For that reason, he believes it is highly unlikely that Washington would consider abandoning such a strategically important location.

Ruiz Arana also pointed out that the US continues to invest heavily in the base, with multiple construction projects currently underway.
Those investments, he said, demonstrate that the facility remains a long-term priority for the US military.
Because of this, the mayor said he simply cannot imagine a future in which Rota loses the American presence.
He warned that removing the base would not only damage the local economy but would also weaken the strategic partnership between Spain and the United States.
‘At the moment it is very difficult to imagine a Rota without the American base,’ he said, adding that the installation continues to play a crucial role for both countries.
Even so, Ruiz Arana said clearer communication from the Spanish government could help calm public concerns.
He suggested that explaining the situation more openly in parliament could reassure residents and reinforce confidence that the situation remains under control.
