The Policia Nacional have issued a warning about a trick used by thieves to steal valuables from cars in parking areas.

In a video shared on the force’s TikTok account, officers explained how criminals use distraction tactics to target drivers returning to their vehicles.

According to police, thieves often watch from nearby while a driver approaches their car, checking whether bags, backpacks or other valuables are left visible inside the vehicle.

Once they identify a target, one of the criminals approaches and drops a few coins near the car.

The suspect then tries to convince the driver that the coins have fallen from their pocket, encouraging them to step out of the vehicle to pick them up.

While the victim is distracted, a second accomplice quickly approaches the car from the other side, grabs the belongings left inside and runs away.

Police say the trick is designed to catch drivers off guard and only takes a few seconds to carry out.

Officers are urging motorists to keep their doors and windows closed even when standing next to their vehicle and never leave valuables visible inside.

They also advise drivers to stay alert to suspicious behaviour in parking areas and to call 091 immediately if they believe they are being targeted.
